Sharmila who hails from Guindy, Chennai has been living apart for the past four years due to grief as she got separated from her husband. She lived with her two sons, aged 10 and 6, at her parents' home. In this situation, Sharmila wanted to live with her husband who is Dindigul considering the future of her children.

So, Sharmila traveled on the Pearl City Express from Chennai Egmore to Dindigul on the night of February 8th. She got into reserved compartment while her ticket was in the waiting list. Upon checking by the TTR, the fact of her waiting list was revealed. Thus, the TTR had asked Sharmila to go to the unreserved compartment. Sharmila told TTR that she had booked but could not get a seat and that she was ready to pay more to get a seat.

The TTR informed her that there was no seat and apparently forced Sharmila to go to the unreserved compartment. Sharmila was thus disturbed in her sleep at night and she got off at Melmaruvathur stop to get into the unreservd compartment but she got stuck between the platform and the train as the train started to move. Thus, her left leg and left arm were amputated in the accident. Neighbors informed the railway police and admitted Sharmila to Chengalpattu Government Hospital.

Sharmila was then admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, Chennai for advanced treatment. She underwent surgery on her left leg and left arm and is currently admitted to the intensive care unit. Sharmila posted a video on social media which stated, "I had an accident because the ticket collector scolded me and I had to  get out of the train in a disturbed sleep."

Sharmila who lost her arms and legs, requested the Government to help her protect her two children and herself. Following this, the Chengalpattu Railway Police have registered a case and are investigating the accident.
